It has been believed that women mature faster than men, and that is why the marriageable age for women in India is 18 while that for men is 21. However, the level of maturity is something that is more individualistic than general. By suggesting that the man should be 3-5 years elder than the woman, you are decrying the marriages where the woman is elder than the man. There was a time when the age difference between the groom and the bride used to be more than 15 years. The convention has been that the woman should be younger (and also shorter) than the man. But in today's age, it is not the age difference between the partners that determine whether or not the marriage will be successful; there are several other factors involved, like the second reason you stated in your post.
